IRAYIAMMAN TAMPI (1782-1856) |

| Musical background: The son of Varman Tampan and Parvati Pilla, Ravi Varman, who later came to be known as Irayiamman Tampi had his musical education under Mootattu Sankaran Elayattu. A highly respected musician, he graced the Travancore court along with other illustrious musicans like Parameswara Bhagavatar, Vadivelu etc.
Region: Kizhake Matem, near Tiruvanatapuram, Kerala. Contribution: Tampi is renowned for his Kathakali plays in sopana style like Daksha Yagnam, Keechaka Vadham and Uttara Swayamvaram. He also composed several Varnams, Padams, Kummis, Keertanas and Navaratri Prabandhams. Signature: He used the mudra Padmanabha, which was also one of the mudras of Maharaja Swati Tirunal. Languages used: Sanskrit, Malayalam and Manipravalam (a mixture of two or more languages). Theme: Mainly devotion, but varied according to the theme he chose.
