Musical Background: Greatly influenced and inspired my Mahakavi Subramanya Bharati, Periyasami Tooran was a respected teacher and patriot as also a composer of merit. Region: He hailed from Modakurichi, Coimbatore district, Tamilnadu. Contribution: A prolific composer, he has composed over six hundred songs on national, spiritual and moral issues. Tooran's songs have been brought out in five volumes titled 'Isai Mani Manjari'. His publications include 'Tooran Stories' (1962), 'Nalla Nalla Pattu' (1965), 'Call of the Wild' and 'Bharati' for children. The credit for bringing out the first ever Children's Encyclopaedia in Tamil in ten volumes also goes to him. His works have been brought out by famous institutions like the Annamalai University, Alliance company, Tamil Isai Sangam and Tamil Writers Association. Language used: Tamil. Themes: Range from the devotional to patriotic to spiritual. Popular compositions: Muruga Muruga (Saveri), Pazhani ninra (Kapi) etc. |
